Accessible Sidewalks and Trails: Planning, Design, and Maintenance
- Course Number: C1002
- Credits: 15 hours
- Instructor: Ellen C. Huang, PE
- Price: $150
Course Outline
This course explores the planning, design, assessment, and maintenance of accessible sidewalks and trails based on the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) publication, "Designing Sidewalks and Trails for Access, Part II: Best Practices Design Guide." Topics include user abilities, movement and information barriers, universal design, pedestrian planning, sidewalk corridors, driveway crossings, pedestrian information, curb ramps, crossings, traffic calming, and construction site safety. The course also covers trail planning and assessment, shared-use paths, recreation and specialized trails, surface characteristics, grades, drainage, maintenance, and research recommendations. Based on the publication’s September 2001 guidance, the course distinguishes recommended design practices from enforceable requirements.
At the end of the course, a multiple-choice, open-book quiz reinforces your understanding of the course material.
