Course Outline
Through mountains, under rivers, beneath cities... tunnels are no boring story! In this course, we will take you underground to explore the history and ingenuity behind some of the world's tunneling marvels. Besides the challenges of tunneling through various types of soil/rock, we will discuss in detail the three steps to a tunnel's success: excavation, support, and lining. In addition, we will address how to reduce fire hazards during tunnel operations. Course highlights include the Hoosac Tunnel, London Underground, Holland Tunnel, Channel Tunnel (Chunnel), Marmaray Tunnel, and Gotthard Base Tunnel.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Know the history of tunnels dating back to the Roman Empire;
- Understand the challenges of tunneling through various types of soil/rock;
- Learn the stories behind some of the most significant tunnel projects in the world; and
- Get familiar with the fundamentals of tunnel design and construction techniques.
