Course Outline
This course introduces Prevention through Design (PtD)—also known as Design for Safety—showing how to “design out” hazards across a facility’s life cycle using the hierarchy of controls. You’ll learn PtD’s strategic goals, relevant OSHA/NIOSH guidance, and practical methods for eliminating, substituting, and engineering out risks in architecture, construction, and operations. We’ll examine roof parapets, embedded anchors, and other permanent features that reduce falls, along with decision-making tools, checklists, and specification language that integrate safety into design reviews, procurement, and commissioning.
At the end of this course, there will be a multiple-choice, open-book quiz, which is designed to enhance your understanding of the course material.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Be able to explain PtD principles and the hierarchy of controls;
- Be able to identify and eliminate or mitigate hazards through lifecycle-focused design choices;
- Be able to apply OSHA/NIOSH guidance, checklists, and specification language in design reviews; and
