Course Outline
This course introduces constructed treatment wetlands through the Orlando Wetlands, a large-scale advanced water reclamation system that has operated since 1987. Students follow reclaimed water from the Iron Bridge Regional Water Reclamation Facility through inflow structures, deep marsh, mixed marsh, hardwood swamp, and outfall controls. The course explains the physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms that remove nitrogen and phosphorus, the importance of hydraulic control and water-quality monitoring, and the long-term need for sediment and vegetation management. The Orlando case study also demonstrates how treatment infrastructure can provide wildlife habitat, public education, recreation, and broader watershed benefits while maintaining its primary water-quality function.
