Wind Energy: Technologies and Trends
- Course Number: E1021
- Credits: 6 hours
- Instructor: Ellen Huang, PE
- Price: $60
Course Outline
Wind energy is a source of renewable power that comes from air currents flowing across the Earth's surface. Wind turbines harvest this kinetic energy and convert it into usable power which can provide electricity for homes, schools, farms, hospitals, factories, and offices. It produces no greenhouse gases or pollution, and uses no water in the generating process, unlike other power sources. This course provides an overview of winds, windmills, wind turbines, and wind power. Besides global wind capacity, it covers data and trends in cost, installation, technology, and performance. In addition, it presents price and value comparisons between wind power and other power sources.
At the end of this course, there will be a multiple-choice, open-book quiz designed to enhance your understanding of the course material.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Know the history of windmills and wind turbines;
- Understand the two basic types of wind turbines;
- Understand how wind turbines work; and
- Appreciate the benefits of wind power.
