Variable Speed Pumping
- Course Number: M2013
- Credits: 3 hours
- Instructor: Ellen Huang, PE
- Price: $30
Course Outline
Pumping systems account for nearly 20% of the world’s energy used by electric motors and 25% to 50% of the total electrical energy usage in certain industrial facilities. Variable speed pumping offers several benefits, from energy savings to improved process control and system reliability. This course is based primarily on the publication Variable Speed Pumping — A Guide to Successful Applications, Executive Summary, which has been developed by the Hydraulic Institute, Europump, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Industrial Technologies Program as a primer and tool to assist plant owners and designers as well as pump, motor, and drive manufacturers and distributors. In addition, pump chart basics are explained along with pump types and operation as well as variable frequency drives.
At the end of this course, there will be a multiple-choice, open-book quiz designed to enhance your understanding of the course material.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Know the basics of pump types and operation;
- Understand the pump performance chart;
- Be able to identify the components of the life cycle cost in pumping operations; and
- Understand all the benefits of variable speed pumping.
