Course Outline
NFPA 1142, Standard on Water Supplies for Suburban and Rural Firefighting, provides a method to determine the minimum water supply needed for structural firefighting in areas where municipal-type fire protection water systems are not available or are inadequate.
This guideline focuses on (1) calculating the required water supply volume and (2) selecting the minimum water delivery rate using NFPA 1142 Table 4.6.1. Final requirements are subject to approval by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
At the end of this course, there will be a multiple-choice, open-book quiz, which is designed to enhance your understanding of the course material.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Identify the inputs required by NFPA 1142 to calculate minimum water supply (volume, occupancy hazard, construction classification, exposures);
- Apply the NFPA 1142 minimum water-supply formula correctly and check results for reasonableness;
- Determine when an exposure factor applies and how it changes the required water supply; and
- Explain key classification concepts: OHC (3–7) and CCN (0.5–1.5) and how they affect the result.
