Course Outline
A building code is a set of rules that specifies the standards for constructed objects, such as buildings and nonbuilding structures. This course provides basic guidance and easy-to-use tools to help engineers and property owners understand building codes. The course materials cover a brief history of building code development, the difference between the International Building Code and International Residential Code,
international codes adoption by state and territory, why building codes are important, and when building codes enter the public domain.
At the end of this course, there will be a multiple-choice, open-book quiz, which is designed to enhance your understanding of the course material.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Know the value of building codes and how they increase occupant safety and disaster resilience;
- Identify who the building codes stakeholders are;
- Understand how the building codes are adopted and the process for doing so; and
- Explain what tools are currently and readily available to support proper construction and rebuilding.
