Course Outline
Light-frame construction is the most popular construction method in North America. This course provides a state-of-the-art engineering resource for constructing light-frame homes, apartments, and townhouses. The course materials are based entirely on the Residential Structural Design Guide (2nd Edition) published by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the 2012 National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction and Supplement published by the American Wood Council (AWC). Part I of this course series covers Chapters 1 through 5 of the Residential Structural Design Guide.
At the end of this course, there will be a multiple-choice, open-book quiz, which is designed to enhance your understanding of the course material.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Become familiar with the terminology used in residential structural design;
- Become familiar with the required minimum live loads for different uses;
- Become familiar with the roof load, wind load and snow load;
- Understand the deflection limits under different types of loads; and
- Have a better understanding of the structural design requirements.
