Course Outline
This course examines the design and construction of wind-resistant homes in coastal environments. Topics include coastal hazards, wind-load concepts, common building failure modes, continuous load paths, structural connections, material selection, and foundation design. Practical construction techniques for improving resistance to hurricanes and high-wind events are also discussed.
An open-book quiz is included at the end of the course to reinforce the course material.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Explain major coastal hazards, including high winds, flooding, storm surge, wave action, erosion, and scour.
- Identify common failure modes of residential buildings exposed to hurricanes and high winds.
