Wood-Based Composite Materials
- Course Number: S1035
- Credits: 3 hours
- Instructor: Helen Chen, Ph.D., PE
- Price: $30
Course Outline
This course explores the innovative use of wood-based composite materials in structural engineering. Based on Chapters 11 and 12 of the Wood Handbook: Wood as an Engineering Material, the course provides an in-depth understanding of panel products, glued laminated timber, structural composite lumber, and advanced wood-nonwood composites. Participants will gain insights into the design, manufacturing, and performance of materials such as plywood, oriented strandboard (OSB), fiberboard, glued laminated timber (glulam), and structural composite lumber (SCL).
At the end of this course, there will be a multiple-choice, open-book quiz designed to enhance your understanding of the course material.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
- Be able to identify the types and properties of wood-based composite materials;
- Be able to explain the manufacturing processes of common wood composites;
- Be able to evaluate the structural applications of wood-based composites; and
- Be able to apply relevant performance standards in selecting wood composites.
